The Cubs came out ahead in managerial maneuvering when Wayne Tyrone singled in the eighth inning to touch off a three-run rally that beat the Cardinals, 8-5. Rick Monday hit two homers for the Cubs, while the Cards had circuit clouts by Ted Simmons and Keith Hernandez. With the score tied, 5-5, Joe Wallis singled in the eighth and took third on a single by Jerry Morales. After Manny Trillo popped up, the Cubs sent up Champ Summers to bat for Rob Sperring.

The Cardinals then brought southpaw Al Hrabosky from the bullpen. The Cubs switched to Tyrone, who bats righthanded, and the substitute pinch-hitter came through with his tie-breaking single, scoring Wallis.
