Tommy Boggs, a loser of four decisions, posted his first major league victory as the Rangers defeated the faltering Royals, 4-1. The loss was the fifth in a row for the West Division leaders, whose margin over the Athletics was cut to six games. Walks to Mike Hargrove and Jeff Burroughs and a single by Roy Howell produced the Rangers' first run in the sixth inning.

Their other markers followed in the eighth after Gene Clines and Toby Harrah singled and Burroughs walked to load the bases. Danny Thompson knocked in two runs with a single and the other tally crossed the plate when Tom Grieve forced Thompson and Fred Patek threw wild to first base attempting to complete a double play.
