The onrushing Pirates swept a doubleheader from the Phillies, 6-2, 5-1, and drew to 5½ games behind the National League East leaders who had a 15 game advantage on August 24. Bruce Kison limited the stumbling Phillies to five hits over the first eight innings and contributed a single and triple to the 12-hit attack in the opener.

Bill Robinson hit a two-run triple in the third and Richie Hebner belted a solo homer in the fifth to support Larry Demery's four-hit pitching in the afterpiece. [The Sporting News]
