A two-run triple by Chris Chambliss and two-run homer by Oscar Gamble enabled the Yankees to break Luis Tiant's seven-game winning streak and defeat the Red Sox, 4-2. Dock Ellis, who started for the Yankees, pitched scoreless ball until Carlton Fisk homered in the seventh inning. The Red Sox then loaded the bases in the eighth, but Dick Tidrow retired the side without allowing a run and earned the save, although giving up a homer by Carl Yastrzemski in the ninth.
