The Cardinals, after losing the first game of a twi-night doubleheader, 7-5, failed to hold a 7-1 lead in the second game and lost again to the Expos, 8-7. In the opener, Lou Brock hit an inside-the-park homer in the fifth inning to give the Cards a 5-4 lead, but the Expos won with a three-run rally in the ninth. Pete Mackanin and Gary Carter led off with singles. Bombo Rivera bunted and forced Mackanin at third. Jose Morales grounded out, but Barry Foote singled, driving in two runs to put the Expos ahead, 6-4. Following an intentional pass to Tim Foli and another walk to Mike Jorgensen, an insurance run scored on a wild pitch by Al Hrabosky.

In the nightcap, the Cardinals built up their 7-1 lead at the expense of Gerry Hannahs, who was making his major league debut after coming up from Quebec City (Eastern). But the Cards' defense fell apart in the sixth when the Expos scored five runs on four hits, two walks and three errors. Foli singled in the eighth and scored the tying run on a double by Jorgensen. Morales then doubled for his 22nd pinch-hit of the season to drive in Jorgensen with the deciding run.
