The onrushing Pirates, who were 15½ games behind on August 24, pulled within 4½ lengths of the Phillies by defeating the Eastern Division leaders, 6-1, to complete a sweep of the three-game series. The victory was the Pirates' 13th in their last 14 games, while the defeat was the Phillies' 11th in their last 12 outings.

Richie Hebner led the Pirates' attack, driving in four runs with a single and double. The Pirates began their scoring with a pair in the second on a single by Bill Robinson, double by Manny Sanguillen and single by Hebner. Dave Parker doubled in the third and scored on a single by Robinson. After Sanguillen was hit by a pitch, Hebner added his two other RBIs with a double.
