Nolan Ryan struck out 18 batters and yielded only three hits while pitching the Angels to a 3-2 victory over the White Sox. Ryan's strikeout total came within one of the major league record for nine innings which the Angels' fireballer shares with Steve Carlton of the Phillies and Tom Seaver of the Mets.

Bruce Bochte homered for the Angels in the second and another run followed in the same stanza on a single by Dave Chalk and double by Andy Etchebarren. The White Sox tied the score in the fifth when Jim Essian walked, Jim Spencer singled and Jorge Orta doubled. The Angels broke the tie in the sixth with a triple by Rusty Torres and double by Bochte.
