Rick Reuschel, who tossed a six-hitter and pitched the Cubs to a 3-2 victory, beat the Phillies for the ninth time in 10 career decisions. The Phillies paired a single by Larry Bowa and double by Mike Schmidt for a run in the first inning, but the Cubs got even in the second with singles by George Mitterwald and Joe Wallis around an infield out by Manny Trillo.

Wallis singled again in the fifth, moved up on a grounder by Mick Kelleher and scored on a single by Rick Monday. Bill Madlock then provided the Cubs' deciding run with a homer in the eighth. The Phillies had a chance to pull the game out of the fire in their half but scored only once on a walk to Tim McCarver, single by Dave Cash, sacrifice bunt by Bowa and sacrifice fly by Schmidt.
