Pinch-hitting in the 12th inning, Champ Summers homered with two men on base to give the Cubs a 4-1 victory over the Phillies, who went down to their 13th defeat in the last 15 games. As a result, the Phillies' East Division lead over the Pirates dropped to four games.

Rick Monday accounted for the Cubs' initial run with a homer in the first inning. The Phillies pulled even with an unearned run in the third, scoring with two out on a walk to Mike Schmidt, single by Greg Luzinski and wild throw by Joe Wallis.
