Equalling his career high, Jerry Koosman gained his 19th victory, pitching the Mets past the Cardinals, 4-1. The lefthander retired the first 16 batters before Mike Tyson reached second base on an error by Joe Torre in the sixth inning and scored on a single by Jerry Mumphrey. The only other Cardinal hit was a single by Ted Simmons in the seventh. The Mets put Koosman on the road to victory with two runs in the fourth on a pass to Torre, double by Mike Vail, an error and sacrifice fly by John Stearns. [The Sporting News]
