Pinch-hitter Tommy Davis delivered a run-scoring single in the ninth inning to give the Angels a 2-1 victory over the slipping Royals, whose lead in the West Division race was cut to 3½ games over the Athletics. Nolan Ryan yielded the Royals' run in the sixth when Fred Patek singled, stole second and scored on a single by Tom Poquette.

The Angels tied the score against Doug Bird in the seventh on singles by Dan Briggs and Tony Solaita and a sacrifice fly by Bruce Bochte. The Angels opened the ninth with singles by Dave Collins and Briggs sandwiched around a forceout by Jerry Remy. Steve Mingori relieved and passed Rusty Torres.
