Don Gullett, making his fourth start for the Reds since being idled for one month by a shoulder injury, turned in his first complete game since June 10 and beat the Dodgers, 4-2, for his second straight victory. The lefthander gave up the Dodgers' runs, one of them unearned, in the second inning.

The Reds took the lead against Doug Rau with three runs in the fourth, two scoring on a single by Cesar Geronimo. Gullett iced his decision with an RBI single in the sixth. With the victory, the Reds expanded their lead over the Dodgers to 12 games and reduced their magic number to four for clinching the West Division title. [The Sporting News]
