With two out in the ninth inning, Rennie Stennett drove in a run with a double to account for a 7-6 victory and pull the Pirates within four games of the Phillies in the East Division race. Bill Robinson drove in four runs for the Pirates with a three-run homer in the second inning and added an RBI with a single in the third. Willie Stargell then made it 5-0 with a circuit clout in the fifth.

After a rain delay of one hour, 22 minutes, the Phillies came back in their half of the fifth and knocked out Jerry Reuss during a three-run rally. Dave Cash drove in two tallies with a bases-loaded single and Greg Luzinski produced the third run with a single off reliever Bob Moose. Larry Bowa tripled and Bobby Tolan singled for another Phillies' run in the sixth. The Pirates tacked on a tally in the seventh when Frank Taveras singled and Stennett doubled, but the Phillies rallied to tie the score in their half when Bob Boone singled to drive in Luzinski and Tim McCarver. In the Pirates' ninth, Duffy Dyer was hit by a pitch. Miguel Dilone ran for Dyer and, after a sacrifice by Omar Moreno, Stennett hit his second double of the game to supply the winning run.
