. . . where the 1970s live forever!

Luis Tiant gained his 19th victory and ninth in his last 10 decisions with batting support from Rick Burleson, Carl Yastrzemski and Butch Hobson, who drove in two runs apiece as the Red Sox defeated the Tigers, 8-3. Jim Rice added a homer to the Red Sox scoring.

Mark Fidrych, who started for the Tigers, lasted only 2 2/3 innings before making his earliest exit in 26 appearances this season. The Red Sox picked up a run in each of the first two stanzas and then chased Fidrych during a five-run outburst in the third. Two homers, one by Willie Horton with a man on base and the other by Ben Oglivie, accounted for the Tiger tallies. [The Sporting News]
