After saving the Phillies from defeat in the ninth inning, Larry Bowa turned around and committed an error in the 12th that enabled the Cubs to gain a 4-3 victory. The loss was the third straight for the Phils and 18th in their last 23 games. The Phillies went into the ninth on the short end of a 3-1 score, but rallied to pull even. Jay Johnstone doubled and crossed the plate on a single by Bob Boone. Jerry Martin ran for Boone and scored the tying run when Bowa tripled.

However in the 12th, Bowa, battling the wind and sun, dropped a pop fly by Champ Summers, who reached second on the error. After Mick Kelleher popped up, Ron Reed walked Joe Wallis intentionally. Failing to relocate the plate, Reed also passed Pete LaCock. Jerry Morales then singled to drive in Summers with the Cubs' winning run. [The Sporting News]
