After saving the Phillies from defeat in the ninth inning, Larry Bowa turned around and committed an error in the 12th that enabled the Cubs to gain a 4-3 victory. The loss was the third straight for the Phils and 18th in their last 23 games. The Phillies went into the ninth on the short end of a 3-1 score, but rallied to pull even. Jay Johnstone doubled and crossed the plate on a single by Bob Boone. Jerry Martin ran for Boone and scored the tying run when Bowa tripled.

However in the 12th, Bowa, battling the wind and sun, dropped a pop fly by Champ Summers, who reached second on the error. After Mick Kelleher popped up, Ron Reed walked Joe Wallis intentionally.
