Pete Rose singled in the fifth inning to reach 200 hits for the eighth season in his major league career, but the Reds lost to the Giants, 4-2. Jim Barr, with the aid of Randy Moffitt, who relieved in the eighth, beat the Reds for the fourth time this year.

The Giants, who had a homer by Marty Perez, built up a 3-0 lead before the Reds posted their pair in the eighth on singles by Ken Griffey and Joe Morgan, a double by Tony Perez and sacrifice fly by George Foster.
