Gaylord Perry gave up 10 hits and walked three but pitched the Rangers to a 4-3 victory over the Athletics, who fell 5½ games off the pace of the Royals in the West Division race. Roy Howell batted in two runs for the Rangers with a double in the third inning and their other tallies counted in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Gene Clines and single by Tom Grieve.

The A's, who had stolen 320 bases this season, ran themselves out of a possible victory in the seventh inning when they collected three hits and a walk, yet failed to score. Bert Campaneris led off with a single and was thrown out trying to steal second. Bill North followed with a single and also was nabbed in an attempt to pilfer second. Claudell Washington then walked and Don Baylor singled, but Perry retired Joe Rudi on a roller to end the threat. [The Sporting News]
