The Phillies clinched the East Division championship with a 4-1 victory in the opener of a doubleheader and then made it more positive by also defeating the Expos, 2-1, in the nightcap, which was called after seven innings because of rain. Greg Luzinski hit his first homer since August 26 to nail down the Phillies' title. Dave Cash walked and Jerry Martin singled before Luzinski smashed his round-tripper in the sixth inning. The Expos came back with a run in their half on a walk to Wayne Garrett and double by Andre Dawson, but the Phillies added an insurance marker in the seventh when Garry Maddox singled, stole second and crossed the plate on a single by Jim Lonborg.

In the rain-shortened second game, Terry Harmon was safe on an error in the third inning, stole second and scored the Phillies' first run on a single by Jay Johnstone. Fred Andrews singled in the sixth, advanced on an error by Pat Scanlon and counted the deciding run on a single by Tim Blackwell. [The Sporting News]
