While Brent Strom pitched a three-hitter, the Padres exploded with a grand slam by Doug Rader and two-run homer by Mike Champion to defeat the Reds, 6-1. Rader rapped his jackpot wallop off Fred Norman in the first inning after the Padres had loaded the bases with singles by Bill Almon and Johnny Grubb and a pass to Merv Rettenmund. Champion's homer in the fourth was the first of his major league career. Strom held the Reds hitless until the eighth inning when George Foster doubled and scored on a single by Tony Perez.
