Steve Garvey singled in the seventh inning for his 199th hit of the season and drove in the run that enabled the Dodgers to defeat the Astros, 1-0. Bill Buckner, who singled and advanced on an infield out, crossed the plate on Garvey's hit.

The Dodgers were directed by Tommy Lasorda, who earlier in the day had been named manager for 1977 to succeed Walter Alston. After that appointment, Alston announced he would step aside and let Lasorda manage the Dodgers for the last four games of the current campaign. [The Sporting News]
