. . . where the 1970s live forever!

The largest opening-night crowd in major league history, 57,762, turned out in the Kingdome to welcome the return of baseball to Seattle, but the Angels put a damper on the occasion by shutting out the new Mariners, 7-0. The Angels' investment in free agents paid immediate dividends when Joe Rudi smashed three hits, including a homer with a man on base in the third inning and a double for two more RBIs in the fourth.

Diego Segui, the only member of the former Seattle Pilots on the current Mariner roster, made his 600th major league pitching appearance, but the 38-year-old righthander was knocked out in the fourth inning. Frank Tanana hurled the route for the Angels and scattered nine hits. [The Sporting News]
