Bill Campbell's first appearance with the Red Sox ended in defeat when the high-priced relief specialist lost to the Indians, 5-4, in an 11-inning game. With a Boston opening-day crowd of 34,790 on hand, Campbell took over for Fergie Jenkins in the eighth and blew a 4-2 lead in the ninth when Buddy Bell smashed a two-run homer. Then in the 11th, Frank Duffy walked, took third on a single by Rick Manning and scored the Indians' winning run by beating the throw home when Duane Kuiper hit a slow bouncer to George Scott at first base.
