Catfish Hunter allowed only three hits in seven innings and Jim Wynn homered on his first time at bat in the A. L. as the Yankees opened their season with a 3-0 victory over the Brewers before a crowd of 43,785. Wynn, appearing as the designated hitter, smashed his homer off Bill Travers in the second. The blow was the 291st of his career for Wynn, who spent the previous 14 seasons in the N. L.

Reggie Jackson scored the Yankees' other runs after hitting singles in the fourth and sixth. Hunter was hit on the foot by a line drive in the sixth and pitched one more inning before yielding the mound to Sparky Lyle. [The Sporting News]
