The Cardinals scored four unearned runs with the aid of three errors in the first inning and proceeded to roll up a 12-6 victory to ruin the Pirates' opening game for the crowd of 35,186. Ken Reitz drove in two runs with a double as the Cards capitalized on the Pirates' faulty fielding. Keith Hernandez then stepped in to assure the Redbirds their victory, batting in two runs with a double in seventh and hitting a homer with a man on base in the eighth. [The Sporting News]
