Tom Seaver hurled the Mets to a 4-0 shutout of the Cardinals, who had collected 38 hits for a club batting average of .325 and scored 28 runs in sweeping a three-game series with the Pirates. Before a crowd of 23,907 in the Shea Stadium opener, Seaver not only pitched a five-hitter but also drove in two of the Mets' runs with a single in the second inning.
