A homer by George Mitterwald in the seventh inning snapped a scoreless duel and started the Cubs off to a 3-1 victory over the Phillies. After Mitterwald's blow, the Cubs scored an additional run in the seventh on an infield hit by Ivan DeJesus and double by Jose Cardenal. The Phillies picked up an unearned run in their half on a two-base error by Steve Ontiveros and single by Jay Johnstone, but the Cubs tacked on an insurance tally in the ninth on a sacrifice fly by Bobby Murcer.
