Wayne Garland's debut with Cleveland was wrecked by the Red Sox, who defeated the Indians, 8-4, for their first victory of the season after four losses. Jim Rice started Garland's downfall with a two-run triple in the first inning. The Red Sox added a pair, one on a double by Carl Yastrzemski, and chased Garland in the fifth.
