Reggie Cleveland pitched a four-hitter and Denny Doyle rapped a triple and two singles as the Red Sox won the opener of a doubleheader, 4-1, but the Indians came back to gain a split with a 10-5 victory in the nightcap. Andre Thornton homered in the third inning for the Indians' lone run in the lidlifter. Doyle tripled and scored on a single by Jim Rice in the fifth. Butch Hobson hit a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded in the sixth and the final Red Sox pair counted on a single by Doyle, double by Carl Yastrzemski and single by Carlton Fisk in seventh.
