A perfect squeeze bunt by Bake McBride climaxed a three-run rally in the fifth inning and brought the Cardinals a 4-3 victory over the Pirates. Ted Simmons homered for the Cards' initial run in the second.

After the Pirates went ahead, 3-1, singles by Ken Reitz, Mike Tyson and pinch-hitter Roger Freed produced the first run in the sixth. Lou Brock walked to load the bases and Garry Templeton hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Tyson. Jerry DaVanon, running for Freed, raced to third on the play and crossed the plate with the winning run on McBride's bunt. [The Sporting News]
