The Phillies struck for three runs in the sixth on home runs by Garry Maddox and Mike Schmidt to defeat the Cubs, 3-1, behind the pitching of rookie Randy Lerch and Ron Reed. Lerch, who hit a double ahead of Maddox' homer, pitched six hitless innings en route to his first major league victory.
