The Cardinals put the leadoff man on base in seven different innings but failed to capitalize on their opportunties and lost to the Mets, 5-2. The Cards' only runs off Jerry Koosman came in the second when Ted Simmons singled and Hector Cruz homered.

The Mets caught up in the fifth and went ahead in the sixth when Joe Torre walked, Roy Staiger sacrificed, John Stearns smashed an infield hit off the foot of Pete Falcone and Ed Kranepool hit a sacrifice fly, scoring pinch-runner John Milner, after Clay Carroll took over in relief for the Cards.
