Vern Ruhle beat the Red Sox twice in 1974, his rookie season, but lost to them five straight times since then before coming out a winner when the Tigers posted a 3-2 victory. Jim Rice homered for the Red Sox in the first inning, but the Tigers came back against Luis Tiant with a double by Milt May and single by Aurelio Rodriguez in the second. Rusty Staub broke the tie with a homer in the third and Steve Kemp provided the winning blow with a circuit clout in the sixth. [The Sporting News]
