The Mariners, playing in only their 16th game, pulled off the first triple play in the major leagues this season and also had a triple by Juan Bernhardt with the bases loaded, but nevertheless lost to the Royals, 6-5. The Royals had John Mayberry at third and Amos Otis at first in the fourth inning when Darrell Porter grounded sharply to Mariner shortstop Craig Reynolds, who stepped on second, forcing Otis, and threw to first to retire Porter.

Mayberry made a delayed attempt to score and was thrown out at the plate on first baseman Dan Meyer's relay to catcher Skip Jutze. After the Mariners took a 5-4 lead on Bernhardt's triple in the eighth, the Royals rallied to win with two out in the ninth when Fred Patek and Pete LaCock singled and George Brett drove them across the plate with a double.
