The relief work of Bruce Sutter in the ninth inning saved a victory for Bill Bonham as the Cubs defeated the Reds, 2-1. The Cubs scored their initial run in the fourth on a pass to Bobby Murcer and double by Jerry Morales. The Reds had scored in the third on a walk to Cesar Geronimo, a sacrifice and single by Pete Rose, but the Cubs picked up their deciding marker in the sixth with singles by Bill Buckner, Morales and Manny Trillo. In the ninth, after George Foster singled off Bonham, Sutter came in and retired the side by striking out Dan Driessen and Johnny Bench and getting Geronimo on a grounder. [The Sporting News]
