Backed by three homers, Jim Palmer pitched the Orioles to a 3-1 victory in the first game of a doubleheader, but the Tigers came back to win the second game, 2-1, on a two-run smash by Mickey Stanley. Tom Shopay homered for the Orioles in the fourth inning of the opener, and in the sixth Ken Singleton and Lee May connected for the circuit on consecutive pitches thrown by Dave Roberts. Palmer was stopped on his string of 23 straight scoreless innings when Aurelio Rodriguez homered in the Tigers' half of the sixth.

In the nightcap, the Orioles scored their run in the third inning on singles by Kiko Garcia and Billy Smith around a sacrifice, but the Tigers gained their victory when Jason Thompson walked and Stanley smashed his round-tripper off Mike Flanagan in the fifth. [The Sporting News]
