The Cubs knocked out Woodie Fryman before the veteran lefthander could retire any batters and scored five runs to start on their way to a 7-1 victory over the Reds. Singles by Ivan DeJesus, Jose Cardenal and Bill Buckner accounted for the first run before Bobby Murcer and Jerry Morales hit successive home runs to rout the Cincinnati starter.
