The Yankees staked Ken Holtzman to a 1-0 lead on a triple by Thurman Munson and grounder by Reggie Jackson, but the Orioles struck back quickly.

Al Bumbry walked and Billy Smith beat out an infield hit. Ken Singleton drove in Bumbry with a single. After a pass to Lee May, Holtzman uncorked a wild pitch, allowing Smith to score.
