Two intentional passes backfired on the Cardinals in losing to the Cubs, 4-1. The Cubs put together singles by Bill Buckner and Manny Trillo around a walk to Bobby Murcer to tie the score at 1-1 in the fourth inning. Murcer took third on Trillo's hit and Trillo advanced to second on the throw. The Cards then passed Steve Ontiveros to load the bases, but George Mitterwald wrecked the strategy with a two-run single. Another intentional pass filled the sacks in the fifth and Trillo was also walked to force in the final marker. [The Sporting News]
