After trailing, 4-0, the Dodgers erupted for six runs in the third inning and defeated the Padres, 7-5, to end their road trip with 11 victories in 12 games. George Hendrick hit a three-run homer for the Padres in the first. A single by Dave Freisleben and triple by Merv Rettenmund added a tally in the second.

The Dodgers began their rally with two runs on singles by Johnny Oates and Davey Lopes, an infield out by Bill Russell and single by Reggie Smith. Ron Cey, who was stopped on his 17-game hitting streak, drew a walk and scored behind Smith when Steve Garvey doubled. Rick Monday then capped the outburst with a two-run homer.
