Helping himself, Steve Carlton singled home what proved to be the winning run as the Phillies defeated the Giants, 6-5. Trailing in the sixth inning, 4-3, the Phillies began their rally with a run on a single by Mike Schmidt, double by Greg Luzinski and sacrifice fly by Jay Johnstone. Tim McCarver and Ted Sizemore followed with singles, Luzinski scoring. After Terry Harmon forced McCarver at third, Carlton came through with his decisive single. [The Sporting News]
