A four-run outburst in the fourth inning started the Phillies on their way to an 8-5 victory over the Padres and made a winner out of Randy Lerch for the fourth time in five decisions. A walk and singles by Mike Schmidt and Greg Luzinski produced the Phils' first run.

After a pass to Richie Hebner, Bob Boone forced Schmidt at the plate, but Gene Tenace's throw to first hit Boone in the back and bounced away as Luzinski scored. Jerry Martin singled to send the Phils ahead, 3-2, and Ted Sizemore hit a sacrifice fly for the fourth run. Schmidt iced the game for the Phillies by hitting a two-run homer in the ninth inning.
