Fireballer Nolan Ryan struck out 15 batters in 8 2/3 innings before wildness forced his exit in favor of Paul Hartzell, who struck out George Scott with the bases loaded to wind up the Angels' 8-4 victory over the Red Sox. Ryan yielded six hits and walked seven.

Bobby Grich hit a two-run homer for the Angels in the third. Bobby Bonds duplicated the blow in the sixth and accounted for another RBI with a single in the seventh. The Red Sox loaded the bases on three walks in the fourth and scored three runs on singles by Dwight Evans and Bernie Carbo.
