Putting on a slugging show for national television viewers, the Pirates defeated the Reds, 12-10, in a game that featured 14 extra-base hits including six homers. Willie Stargell smashed two and Al Oliver one for the Pirates, while the Reds had round-trippers by Dan Driessen, George Foster and Joe Morgan.

The Pirates came out ahead with the aid of an error by Ken Griffey, who dropped a line drive by Duffy Dyer with the bases loaded in the seventh inning as two runs scored.
