Putting on a slugging show for national television viewers, the Pirates defeated the Reds, 12-10, in a game that featured 14 extra-base hits including six homers. Willie Stargell smashed two and Al Oliver one for the Pirates, while the Reds had round-trippers by Dan Driessen, George Foster and Joe Morgan.

The Pirates came out ahead with the aid of an error by Ken Griffey, who dropped a line drive by Duffy Dyer with the bases loaded in the seventh inning as two runs scored. Grant Jackson, the third of four Pirate pitchers, then doubled to drive in another pair. Terry Forster, in relief, gained credit for his first N. L. victory. [The Sporting News]
