A national television audience saw the Cardinals inflict the Reds' fifth defeat in a row, 6-5, on a leadoff homer by Ted Simmons in the home half of the 10th inning. Simmons' sixth homer made a winner of reliever Al Hrabosky, who struck out George Foster, Johnny Bench and pinch-hitter Bob Bailey with the bases filled in the ninth.

Hrabosky also wiggled out of a jam in the 10th, when pinch-hitter Ray Knight singled and Ken Griffey doubled off the right field wall. Mike Anderson threw to Don Kessinger, whose relay to Simmons nailed Knight at the plate. [The Sporting News]
