Mike Caldwell, who put down a bases-loaded threat in the seventh inning, went on to gain his first save of the season when the Reds defeated the Cardinals, 5-1. Caldwell replaced Jack Billingham with the sacks jammed and one out and induced pinch-hitter Mike Anderson to ground into a double play. The Reds stole five bases, including three by Dave Concepcion.
