Tom Griffin smashed a homer in his own behalf and combined with Rollie Fingers to pitch the Padres to a 5-2 victory over the Mets, who suffered their 10th defeat in the last 11 games. Jerry Koosman, who gave up Griffin's homer in the seventh inning, was losing, 2-0, when he was removed for a pinch-hitter.

The Padres then fell on Bob Myrick for three runs in the eighth on a triple by Dave Winfield, a walk and singles by Doug Rader, Mike Champion and Bob Davis, plus an error. Griffin was lifted in the eighth after Felix Millan singled and John Milner homered. Fingers finished and picked up his sixth save. [The Sporting News]
