Fred Lynn, making his first appearance of the season after suffering a foot injury in spring training, hit solo homers in his first two times at bat, but the Red Sox also needed a two-run blow by George Scott to defeat the Mariners, 7-5. After Lynn's first homer to start the game, the Mariners scored five runs in their half of the first inning, kayoing Luis Tiant.

Bill Stein batted in a pair with a double and scored on a single by Bob Stinson before Ruppert Jones capped the outburst with a homer. The Red Sox cut into the Mariners' margin with the aid of Lynn's second homer in the third inning before forging ahead to win in the eighth on Scott's smash. [The Sporting News]
