Lenny Randle and Dave Kingman clouted homers in the first inning to provide more than enough support for Jon Matlack, who pitched the Mets to a 3-0 victory over the Dodgers. Randle hit his homer with one away and, after Ed Kranepool singled, Kingman smashed a tremendous drive over the left-center field wall. The ball took one hop before striking a parking lot fence 518 feet from home plate. Matlack scattered seven hits and became the first pitcher to shut out the Dodgers this season.
