Dave Concepcion hit his first homer of the season as the finishing blow in the first inning when the Reds erupted for five runs to defeat the Giants, 6-4. Pete Rose, who had two hits in the game to boost his career total to 2,800, led off with a single. Ken Griffey, Joe Morgan and Dan Driessen followed with doubles.

Driessen was picked off second, but Cesar Geronimo resumed the attack with a single and Concepcion capped the outburst with his homer. Fred Norman had the Giants shut out until the seventh when pinch-hitter Randy Elliott smashed a grand-slam homer. Rawly Eastwick relieved and finished. [The Sporting News]
