The Orioles moved into first place in the East Division, ahead of the Yankees, by defeating the Athletics, 3-2, for their ninth victory in the last 11 games. The Orioles scored what proved to be the winning run in the fifth inning. Al Bumbry singled with one out and stole second.

After the A's walked Tony Muser intentionally, Lee May singled to drive in Bumbry. Dennis Martinez saved the game, putting down an A's threat after Ross Grimsley was removed with two men on base and none out in the eighth inning. [The Sporting News]
